Renault India has launched the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 today, adding a third powertrain to the 2026 Duster line-up that already offered a 1.0-litre and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol. Introductory prices start at Rs. 16.99 lakh ex-showroom, and the hybrid is available in three variants: Evolution, Techno and Emotion. It becomes the fourth strong hybrid option in the mid-size SUV segment, joining the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Maruti Grand Vitara and Victoris twins.

How the E-Tech Hybrid System Works

The powertrain pairs a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, running on the Atkinson cycle with a claimed 41% thermal efficiency, with two electric motors: a generator and a traction motor. Combined system output is 158 BHP and 208 Nm, with a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 9.61 seconds. The 1.4 kWh, 247V NMC battery is directly refrigerant-cooled and charges while driving, with no external plug-in required. A dedicated hybrid multi-mode gearbox with 2 electric and 4 petrol gears manages transitions across six auto-selected operating modes, blending EV-only running, engine-only running, and combined modes based on driving conditions. Renault claims the system can handle 80% of city driving in EV mode alone.

The headline efficiency figure is ARAI-certified 29 km/l, a number that puts it comfortably ahead of the turbo-petrol Dusters and squarely in hybrid SUV territory. Renault also claims a combined tank range of up to 1,400 km, which, if matched anywhere near that in real-world use, significantly reduces refuelling stops on long highway runs.

Where It Sits in the Duster Range

The Duster Strong Hybrid joins a line-up that spans from Rs. 10.49 lakh for the base 1.0-litre turbo-petrol to Rs. 19.49 lakh for the range-topping Emotion hybrid, giving the Duster a wide spread that covers budget-conscious buyers at one end and efficiency-focused ones at the other. The hybrid variants are priced at a premium over the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol equivalents but bring meaningfully better claimed efficiency in return, and are aimed directly at buyers who would have previously looked at diesel options in this segment.

Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160: Variant-wise Prices (Ex-showroom)

What to Watch For

Real-world efficiency figures on strong hybrids typically land below ARAI numbers, though owners of the Hyryder and Grand Vitara have regularly reported 18-22 km/l in mixed driving, a number that still comfortably beats any petrol SUV without a hybrid system. Renault’s claim of 80% EV mode running in the city is aggressive and will depend heavily on driving speed and conditions. A full driving review will follow once we get seat time.
